Overland Park Presbyterian Church is a family of God where people are loved and accepted as they are, while being encouraged to grow in faith and to serve others in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. As Christians, we believe that Jesus Christ was and is the Son of God in a very special and unique way. We believe that Jesus was born, lived and died as a man, yet He was and is also one with God. When we believe and trust in Jesus and live according to His teachings, our lives become fuller, more whole, and we find ourselves no longer in conflict with what is best for ourselves and for those around us. What did Jesus teach? He taught us to love God with all our heart, all our strength, and with all our mind, and to love others as ourselves. Following Jesus means to live a life based on love and the requirements of love. This is not always easy, and we frequently fail to do it. We often do just what we want when we want, even if it hurts us or others. That is what we call "sin" and it separates us from what is the best God would have us be and do. It separates us from God. In physics we learn that for every action there is an equal reaction. The same is true in life. What we do, how we live, has consequences. God paid the ultimate consequence of our sin by dying for it in the person of Jesus; and then, to show that He is stronger and more powerful than sin itself, than death itself, Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to His followers. This is best explained in the book of John 3: 16-17 which is found in the Bible: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not die but have everlasting life. For God sent His Son into the world not that the world should be condemned but that the world would be saved through Him." As followers of Jesus, we have received the power and strength we need to live out lives of faith through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God who dwells with us giving us the strength and wisdom we need for the living of our days. Jesus called the Holy Spirit our Comforter and Counselor. We believe, then, in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is known as the Trinity. At times, the Trinity is known as Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Our life of faith includes: · worship · service to others · and sharing God's love in Jesus Christ We believe that the Bible is the Word of God and by reading it we discover who God is and the way God would have us live. As Presbyterians we have a book of faith statements that lines out what we believe. This book is called The Book Of Confessions. It contains statements written throughout the centuries. The best recognized of these is The Apostle's Creed. The earliest version of that statement was written around 180 AD. The Brief Statement of Faith is the most recent and it was written after 1983.
